You can always find one truth in a hundred lies. In other words, despite the fact that something can be posted over and over again with different versions, there will always be one true fact. Unless of course you count gossip.
If you think about it, if there were 100 people at an event and each posted a piece of information different from each other; you would have a detailed story. Of course thats if people stayed close to the truth. With this said, I think the quality has improved, because we as a people are getting two sides of the story, and have many different ways to access it. We get the popular view and perhaps a personal view. With news sites having their own blogs and accounts on various social media, the public can quickly access this. Information is not in short supply these days.
I also have the view that the while the quantity of news has increased thanks to social media, the quality has decreased. But the one thing I didn't really think much about is the whole citizen reporting thing and how it can give you a more personal view on the news, instead of a journalist's formal report. So I guess that can be beneficial to how we get information and news, helping us form a better opinion on it by seeing a personal account of the story. With social media we also can share our thoughts and opinions on news stories with each other, which helps us learn and understand things better. I still think that traditional media is important and that people shouldn't rely on social media too much for their information, but it can be a good way to get more personal insight into a news story that you wouldn't really get from traditional media. So thanks for bringing up that point, it definitely made me think some more about the good things social media has done for the way we get news and information.
ReplyDeleteWhile I do believe the quantity has improved do really think we’re getting to sides of any story I’m finding that although we do get information right as it happens most of what I read is pretty much the same and with most people not being professional journalist the details and quality has gone down.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed the line "I believe that the quantity of the news has increased, and the quality has slightly deceased." Reminds me of people talking about Jersey Shore! lol!
